WHO WE ARE:

The Growth Cap Coalition (GCC) is a volunteer, non-partisan, grass-roots organization of Polk County residents concerned about our future. Sprawling subdivisions, aggressive annexations and up-zonings approved by local politicians are undermining our quality of life. By controlling urban sprawl, we believe that we can reduce taxes and provide better protection for our water supplies while conserving open space, agricultural lands and wildlife resources. Coalition members include neighborhood, environmental and civic leaders and residents who are working to shape a better future for Polk County. GCC Members researched ways to control sprawl for nearly two years. We examined efforts in other parts of Florida and the nation, talked to experts and sought legal opinions. The result of our research is the CHARTER AMENDMENT RELATING TO GROWTH MANAGEMENT. Our volunteers will be working hard over the next year to obtain the signatures needed to place this citizen’s initiative on the ballot.

WHAT WE BELIEVE:

The rural character which makes Polk County so appealing is being replaced by oceans of rooftops and traffic that rivals major cities.

It is not too late for citizens to shape the future of Polk County to have the best of both worlds: rural and urban.  We can begin this process by reigning in the destructive local government policies that appear to be driven by greed and self-interest.  We can bring some sanity to the growth policies of our county and cities and move towards establishing a sustainable economy and environment.

  • Residential growth should be capped to prevent the over-development of Polk County.
  • Development should be directed to urban areas where infrastructure is available and more cost effective to provide.
  • A residential growth cap will work to preserve our quality of life, protect water and wildlife resources and conserve open space and agricultural lands.
  • Capping growth should, over time, stabilize or reduce taxes by reducing infrastructure costs .
